Department of Fetal Medicine

Establishing a fetal medicine centre with a comprehensive perinatal pathology and Genetics lab

Dr Suresh and Dr Indrani Suresh were the first to provide fetal medicine services since 1987 in the country.Their passion for providing care to the unborn child and the constant endeavour to ensure high quality work and provide state of the art diagnostics has ensured that their institution has been in the forefront of providing and developing all aspects of this speciality. Establishing a fetal medicine centre with a comprehensive perinatal pathology and Genetics lab

The need for supportive services to aid diagnosis and fetal therapy and to provide counselling services lead to the establishment of a perinatal pathology unit, a high quality genetic lab and a department of dysmorphology and clinical genetics. The institution also has a clinical epidemiology unit.

This department offers

Prenatal Diagnosis
Addresses genetic disorders and structural malformations by analysing samples from the fetus in the womb
Fetal Therapy
Intrauterine treatment procedures like intrauterine transfusion, fetal shunting, embolization and medical fetal therapy

The diagnosis of congenital malformations has been one of the major areas of interest and research of The Mediscan Prenatal Diagnosis & fetal therapy Centre with highly skilled personnel involved in prenatal diagnosis. Over the last decade, over 4000 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been performed successfully.Antenatal diagnostic techniques like chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis and fetal blood sampling are routinely done as outpatient procedures.

Over the years this institution has become a tertiary referral centre not just from all over the country but from the South Asian region both for antenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy. Over 12,000 fetal procedures have been done and many of them are done free of cost. The first intrauterine transfusion for Rh isoimmunisation was done in 1991 at MediScan systems. Since then about 283 transfusions have been done. About 60% of these are done free of cost. The first successful thoraco-amniotic shunt in India was performed in 1995 and the first arterial embolisation of an acardiac twin was done in 1993 at MediScan and both babies are growing into fine citizens today. Other first time fetal interventional procedures such as vescicoamniotic shunt and bipolar cautery for TTTS have been performed. Other fetal procedures like selective ablation of an abnormal twin and multifetal reduction have helped many mothers realise their dream of having a normal child.
